A reliable Workhourse

Powered by a reliable 130-220hp diesel engine ( owners choice). Most passages will be made with the engine running, usually around 1,600 - 1,700 rpm. There will also be times you wish to just sail, and the Mandarin 52' does that well also. But if high speed motoring is desired, the Mandarin 52' can easily exceed 10 knots under engine power alone. Still, one of the true pleasures of sailing is not hearing or feeling the engine. This is where the Mandarin 52' really shines. Alarms for engine overheat, engine raw/salt water flow, intake trunk and high bilge are all standard.

Our goal , with the Mandarin 52 ', was to isolate the engine ,
so people aboard would be unable to feel the difference between
motorsailing and true sailing. This was accomplished by soft
mounting the engine on its own set of box stringers, which
are not connected to the vessel's main stringers. To make this
system truly functional, the propeller shaft has its own thrust
bearing mounted in a floor timber, and is connected to the
engine through a splined, double "U" joint sub-shaft.

A superiorly designed engine box obtains the desired level of sound insulation. Built using special, sound absorbing plywood, consisting of two layers of wood with a sound absorbing material between them. Additionally, the interior of the engine box is lined with multi-density rubber pads.
This attention to vibration and sound means the Mandarin 52' has one of the quietest engine installations ever developed for a production vessel of this size! Easy access to both sides of the engine room for maintainence and cleaning.
